                  <text>Het Meetjesland, een naam die pas in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw ingeburgerd raakte, is geen vast omlijnde regio. Men rekent tussen de twaalf en veertien Oost-Vlaamse (fusie)gemeenten tot de streek, waaronder Assenede. Vanaf de late achttiende eeuw kwam het traditionele samenlevingsmodel in het Meetjesland onder druk. Om rond te komen combineerde het modale gezin intensieve landbouw op kleine percelen met thuisarbeid in de textielsector. Een groeiende bevolking en de onmogelijke concurrentie met gemechaniseerde productiecentra leidden tot toenemende armoede. Een reeks misoogsten luidde in de jaren 1840 een periode van hongersnood en diepe ellende in. Toen vanaf de jaren 1870 goedkoop Amerikaans graan de Europese markt overspoelde, werd de toestand voor velen onhoudbaar. Zij pendelden naar de grote Gentse katoenfabrieken of trokken als seizoenarbeider richting Noord-Frankrijk of Wallonië. Ook een definitieve uitwijking werd in vele gezinnen een ernstige optie.</text>
