Toen vanaf de jaren 1870 goedkoop Amerikaans graan de Europese markt overspoelde, werd de toestand voor velen onhoudbaar. Zij pendelden naar de grote Gentse katoenfabrieken of trokken als seizoenarbeider richting Noord-Frankrijk of Wallonië. Ook een definitieve uitwijking werd in vele gezinnen een ernstige optie.
